Discover the small-but-sweet Nantahala cabin

You know what they say: All good things come in small packages. Over the years, we’ve seen the popularity of log homes grow and with that, a variation in styles, grandeur and, most importantly, size. We can certainly appreciate these huge wooden palaces, but could we ever really aspire to live in one? That’s what is so perfect about going back to basics - compact, simple, traditional-shaped log homes alongside the comforts of modern life that we are used to.
The Nantahala by Appalachian Log Structures is a great example of a home we log home enthusiasts can see ourselves in. At one with nature, a decent size with 1,260 square feet of living space, it’s a good in-between option for those who want to take the plunge and move home permanently, but don’t fancy a tiny woodland cabin. Have we inspired you to take the tour? Let’s explore…

Standing proud between the trees, this two-story retreat blends perfectly into its surroundings in a dark Eastern wood pine. There’s something fairytale-like about this pretty log home - the characteristic square-shape design with rising elevated roof space and quaint shuttered windows. It really is beautiful from the outside.
We enter this charming lodge from the porch into almost L-shaped, open-plan living quarters – very common of traditional log home designs. The modest living room is homely in design with various, comfortable plaid-covered sofas, old-fashioned furniture, and an archetypal rug. The floors and ceilings are of the same light wood as the walls, creating a warm, bright ambience – perfect for cold nights on the mountain. We love the beamed cathedral ceiling which gives the home that winter-cottage appearance.
The ground floor of this stunning little cabin boasts three large glass doors which, when opened up in summer months, are perfect for extra ventilation or just easy access to the big outdoor space. Two of those doors are directly into the dining/kitchen. We love the continuity in the use of wood for both the dining table and kitchen cupboards, which are plentiful and provide lots of storage. With a full-sized fridge, cooker, dishwasher and a great preparation island with extra breakfast bar, a family would have more than enough space here.
The Nantahala features two large bedrooms for this size of cabin, one of which is accessed through the living room. The incredible, double, 4-poster bed fits perfectly with the overall design of this home and the clean, uncluttered style keeps the room cozy, bright and appealing – the large built-in closet helps! The ceiling beams are visible in here too, giving the room character.
Before heading upstairs, let’s take a look at one of the two bathrooms. One thing that strikes us about this lovely log cabin is the attention to detail. Every room has been well thought out in order to create a home as a whole. The old-fashioned claw-foot bathtub and the mosaic-style window design really make this bathroom unique.
Despite remaining open plan upstairs, there are definitely two distinctive areas. The design of this great cabin is brilliant, as it allows owners to fit a lot into a relatively small plot. The shed dormer on one side of the upper level acts as a second bedroom and bathroom space. The vaulted ceilings are high enough to walk around in, and light floods in through the large back window.
On the opposite side of the upper, second-floor loft space is a great little hide-out for those moments you want some peace and quiet. It could also easily be used as extra sleeping quarters if friends come for a getaway at the weekends. Could the view from this room be any more pleasing?
The Nantahala is ideal for this type of mountain setting, and the large wrap around porch really lends itself to cool nights star gazing or having a drink outside with friends. Luckily, it’s also sheltered in case it starts to rain.
